Arsene Wenger will accept FA charge

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said he will accept a Football Association charge for misconduct. The charge relates to the Frenchman’s misconduct during Arsenal’s 2-1 win against Burnley on Sunday, January 22.

Wenger has been charged with verbally abusing and pushing the fourth official, Anthony Taylor, after being sent off in the closing moments of his sides win.

The 67-year-old was sent to the stands after reacting angrily to the referee’s decision to award Burnley a penalty in the 93rd minute of the Premier League fixture at The Emirates Stadium.

Sean Dyche’s side, who are currently sitting in the bottom half of the table, scored to level the score 1-1 after Arsenal had dominated a majority of the game.

However, the controversy didn’t end there, as the home side were then awarded an even later penalty, deep into added time. Alexis Sanchez converted for Arsenal, ensuring his side took all three points, right at the death.

Wenger’s reaction

Following the incidents which brought the FA charge, Wenger later apologised and said that he will request a personal hearing.

He told BBC Sport:

“I’ve said what I have publicly and the rest will be more discreet. I don’t know if I will be punished and how I will be punished. The only thing I can say is that when I was sent off I was surprised and then I was in the tunnel which is where I thought I could be.”

Jon Moss, who refereed Sunday’s game, was the man that sent Wenger to the stands. However, the Arsenal manager moved only as far as the tunnel and refused to move any further as he tried to watch the last few moments of the game. After Taylor asked him to leave, Wenger pushed him away.

When asked if he was going to accept the charge, the Arsenal manager said:

“Yes. I am big enough to stand up for what I do. When I don’t behave like I think I should behave, I am big enough to say I am not right. I’m a passionate guy and I believe that I am completely committed in my job and want to win football games.”
