Top 10 footballers with the most powerful shots

Everybody loves goals. Some of the most spectacular goals come from moments of magic, perhaps a blistering run through the heart of an opposition defense, or a fancy 20 pass build up move finished off by a striker tapping the ball into the net. But occasionally, a wonder goal is scored from a shot taken far outside the penalty box, that nestles into a top corner. These, arguably, are the most spectacular goals of all.

To achieve something like this, players need the ability to strike a ball clean and hard, so we’ve compiled a list of 10 footballers that have some of the most powerful shots in the game.

David Luiz

Chelsea’s centre-back has been gaining praise recently for his defensive performances under Antonio Conte. As well as being a rock at the back, Luiz also has a cannon of a right boot. Before he was sold to Paris Saint-Germain for a world-record fee for a defender, he scored some memorable goals for Chelsea. One strike against Fulham, from over 30 yards out, is one of his best ever. Since rejoining the Blues in 2015, he is yet to strike again, but inevitably will.

Hulk’s name certainly backs his power on the football pitch. After joining Shanghai SIPG in the summer of 2016 for a ludicrous amount of money, the Brazilian has become an almost forgotten man. However, a number of his long-range goals, including one against Benfica whilst he was playing for Porto, ensures no one will forget his power anytime soon.

The former Chelsea man is the second defender to make the list. Like Luiz, he was well respected in London, and at a number of his other clubs like PSG and AC Milan, for his solid defending. But he also had a thunderous shot on him. It was on show when he scored his most memorable goal for Chelsea, a free-kick from 30 yards out against Liverpool in a Champions League quarter-final at Stamford Bridge. It’s one of the best goals Chelsea have scored in the competition to date.

Cristiano Ronaldo

No top 10 list would be complete without Ronaldo. The Real Madrid man has it all: speed, power, and pace, amongst other abilities. Of course, it’s power that we’re focusing on, and Ronaldo has shown it off on plenty of occasions. None more so than against Porto in the Champions League for Manchester United, when he scored from 40 yards out in 2009.

Gareth Bale

Another galactico that makes the list is Welshman Bale. When he first joined Madrid, you’d be forgiven if you suggested he wasn’t all that powerful. But since moving to Spain, Los Blancos have toughened him up and molded him into a monster. Against Elche in 2014, Bale picked a loose ball up from around 30 yards out, before taking a touch and arrowing it towards goal. It looked extra sweet bouncing in off the crossbar.

Paul Pogba

United’s most expensive signing has one of the strongest right foots in the game at the moment. His goal for Juventus against Udinese in 2013 is one of the most watched goals on YouTube. He’s no stranger to taking long shots, though, as he scores a majority of his goals from outside the penalty box.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Another of United’s summer signings makes the list. Like Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic has a range of abilities that makes him one of the best on the planet. In 2012, the Swedish striker marked the opening of his nation’s national stadium with a goal from around 30 yards out against England. What makes it special though? It was a bicycle kick. He was facing his own goal and still picked out the net.

Wayne Rooney

The fourth (and final) player from Manchester on the list is Rooney. The striker is very well known for his thunderous shots that fly past helpless goalkeepers. Over the years he’s scored too many to name, but one sticks out above the rest. In 2014, the England striker scored from 55 yards out, just outside his own half, against West Ham United. He did what many players can only dream of, and as he watched the ball drop over the goalkeepers head, he was almost as far away from it as we were.

Arjen Robben

He’s not exactly well known for his raw power and is more recognized for his dizzy runs, but Robben certainly has a strong shot. While playing for Bayern Munich in 2015, the Dutch winger found the net from outside the box. He picked out the top corner with power and swerve, ensuring the helpless Bochum goalkeeper could get nowhere near it.

Luis Suarez

The final player on the list is Suarez. He’s the ultimate marksman, and since joining Barcelona has found himself on the end of numerous team goals to tap into an empty net. But when he was playing for Liverpool in 2013, he showed he has the power and ability to be one of the best in the world. When a loose ball dropped from the air around 40 yards from goal, Norwich’s keeper could be forgiven for thinking there would be no danger. But Suarez put his foot through it, catching the sweetest of volley’s, and lobbed the keeper from near the halfway line. It was a truely unbelievable strike.
