FA Cup: Lincoln City shocks Burnley to reach quarter-finals

Premier League side Burnley and National League team Lincoln City met at Turf Moor for their FA Cup Last-16 encounter.

This was the first time in FA Cup history, that two fifth-tier clubs reached the Last-16 stage of the competition. One of them was Lincoln City, and the other one is Sutton United, who will face Premier League giants Arsenal on their home ground later today.
All odds were on Burnley’s side for Saturday’s game, mainly as Lincoln City is 81 places behind the Clarets in the football pyramid.

Pre-match stats:
– Burnely currently occupy 12th spot in the Premier League
– Burnely have only lost 3 of their previous 29 competitive matches at home
– Burnely were unbeaten in their last seven meeting with Lincoln City
– Burnely have not reached the sixth round of the competition since the 2002/03 season, losing at the fifth round four times
– Lincoln City are currently leading their league with a one-point advantage over Tranmere
– Lincoln City won seven of their last eight competitive games, winning each of their last four matches
– Lincolny City reached the fifth round of the FA Cup for the first time since the 1886/87 season, where they lost to Glasgow Rangers

Burnely started the game with a strong line-up, which suggested that Sean Dyche didn’t take the tie lightly:
Heaton – Darikwa, Keane, Tarkowski, Flanagan – Arfield, Barton, Westwood, Gudmundsson – Gray, Vokes

Meanwhile Lincoln City sent out the follwing starting eleven:
Farman – Wood, Waterfall, Raggett, Habergham – Hawkridge, Power, Woodyard, Muldoon – Arnold, Rhead.

Despite being the clear favourites for the game, Burnley just could not find the way to their opponent’s goal, despite having several chances to do so. It was punished at the other end, as Lincoln broke the deadlock in the 89th minute, thanks to a header from Sean Raggett. The home side put the visitors under real pressure, but could not find a late equaliser, which means it was the underdogs who progressed to the Last-8 for the first time in their history.

Post-match reactions

Lincoln boss Danny Cowley:
“It’s a football miracle for a non-league team to be in the last eight. The boys were excellent, playing against a Premier League team.

“We are always realists, I will never ask the players to do something they’re not capable of. But we thought if we could get the game plan right we could compete.

“Maybe young top-level centre halves are not used to playing against that up top. It was a bit of a throwback.”

Burnley manager Sean Dyche:

“I’m only gutted in the sense that could happen, I was on the other side of it [at Chesterfield]. You don’t want to be part of it for the wrong reasons.

“They used everything they needed to use. They played our pitch well, played resolutely with their back four not going anywhere and they got the ball forward.

“My team were nowhere near the level they can show. You have to work, be diligent and believe you will get another chance. I think they only had one chance, credit to them.”

On Sunday it turned out that Lincoln City will face the winner of tonight’s encounter between fellow surprise package Sutton United and Arsenal.
