Champion’s League: Manchester City vs Monaco.

Manchester City host Monaco on Tuesday night in the first leg of their Champion’s League last-16 tie.

Manchester City will try to reach the quarter finals for second time in its history while Monaco will look for its second presence in a UEFA Champion’s League quarter final.

Although it is the first competitive encounter between Manchester City and Monaco, historical facts show that both of them have reasons to be worried. Manchester City have never lost to French  opposition in European competition.  Meanwhile Monaco have come out on top in each of their three Champion’s League knockout ties with English clubs.

Josep Guardiola has reached the semi – finals of the Champion’s League seven times as a Barcelona manager, and this is his first time against a French rival since 2009 quarter finals.  Speaking at his pre-match press conference Guardiola said

“Monaco are the most successful team in Europe in terms of scoring goals, so this is a tough draw” . “We are looking forward to playing against them. They are a really good team”

For its part, manager Leonardo Jardim said,

City are strong in the transition, they have five forwards at some point when they pour forward. They are good defensively too, but we need to create difficulties for them and put them under pressure. We have watched them in their past five or six games.”

City are unbeaten in their last eight Champion’s League home games but  this tie will represent a huge test hosting the team that leads Ligue 1 by three points from Paris St Germain and scored 76 goals in 26 games.
