Champion’s League: Benfica vs Borussia Dortmund preview

Champions’s League starts again with Borussia Dortmund being favourite

UEFA Champions League football action finally resumes on Tuesday with two of the much awaited fixtures. SL Benfica, the Portuguese team will play the Germans, BVB Borussia 09 Dortmund in Lisbon at their home ground, Estadio da Luz. Both teams will aim to win this fixture in order to get one step closer to secure a place in the Champions League quarterfinals.

Benfica’s domestic performance has been great, with them being at the top of the table in Primeira Liga, ahead of the title rivals Porto. They have scored 47 goals while conceding only 12 meaning their goal difference of 35 goals is one of the best in Europe. They suffered a slump in form after suffering two back to back losses but they’re back to winning ways after their recent 4-0 win over CD Tondela. The Portuguese have had lady luck on their side during the group stage, enabling them to proceed to the last 16. However, they know that they will have to win their home game in order to have any chance of proceeding to the quarterfinals. Their visit to the Westfalenstadion, Dortmund will be extremely difficult as it is one of the toughest grounds for an away game in Europe.

Borussia Dortmund, on the other hand, have been struggling with in their domestic league. With just 9 wins in 20 games, the Germans sit at fourth place in the Bundesliga’s point table with just 34 points, 15 behind league leaders, Bayern Munich. Their dreams of winning Bundesliga are over and now they have to focus on securing a berth in the next edition of Champions League. Their form in Champions League till now has been great. They topped their group, ahead of the Spanish giants Real Madrid, ending both home and away games with 2-2. They won all of their remaining matches including 0-6 away and 8-4 home win against Legia Warsaw. They are undefeated as of now and would like not to break their streak in this game. They can probably count on a win at their home ground.

The Germans eliminated Benfica in their only encounter with each other in the European Cup, way back in 1963/64. Dortmund lost 2-1 in the first leg, but won 5-0 at home to win the two legged tie. Also, Benfica have only won once in their last 15 European Cup/Champions League games against German opponents, with their last win coming way back in November 1998 against Kaiserslautern. They have drawn 5 and lost 9 of their games. History is with the Germans here.

Team News

Benfica doesn’t have a lot of missing players. Their forward Andrija Zivković and defender Lisandro Lopez are injured and most definitely won’t play. Andrija Zivkovic is going to miss the match through suspension. Jonas suffered a knock and is doubtful for the game. If Jonas misses the match, Pizzi could take his spot. Everyone else is fully fit and available for selection. Coach Rui Victoria is likely to field his preferred 4-4-2 formation.

Dortmund would be hoping that they don’t suffer due to injury to key players. Mario Gotze and Sven Bender are injured and out of the match for sure. Meanwhile, the fitness of Nuri Sahin and Sebastian Rode is also a matter of speculation and their participation in the match is highly doubtful. Dortmund still possesses a great line up without these players, but their bench would be a subject of worry for coach Thomas Tuchel. Any other injury during the match could cause serious problems for the Germans.

Projected Starting Line-up

Benfica: Ederson Moraes; Almeida, Victor Lindelof, Luisao, Nelsinho; Franco Cervi, Pizzi, Fejsa, Eduardo Salvio; Jonas, Mitroglou

Borussia Dortmund: Roman Burki; Matthias Ginter, Sokratis, Bartra, Raphael Guerreiro; Julian Weigl; Pulisic, Dembele, Castro, Marco Reus; Aubameyang

Prediction

Borussia Dortmund has a better team and a better record, and should move to quarterfinals easily; however, their performance have been average lately while Benfica have been in a great form at home. Owing to the current forms of both the teams, Benfica should be able to do just about enough to take the match to Germany for results. Our prediction is that the match is going to end with a 1-1 draw.
