Arsenal: Santi Cazorla ruled out for the rest of the season

Santi Cazorla suffered an ankle injury in October, during Arsenal’s Champions League encounter against Ludogorets. The midfielder has not featured for the Gunners since then.
Cazorla underwent several surgeries, with initial reports suggesting he should have been available by December.

In December he had another surgery to correct an Achilles injury, and first it was thought that he would be back by March. Now Arsene Wenger is less optimistic, and according to reports, Arsenal set up a recovery programme for Cazorla in order to be back fully fit for the start of the new season.

Arsenal are suffering in his absence, as it is clear that his vision and passing ability is missing from the middle of the park.
At the moment Arsenal only has Francis Coquelin and Granit Xhaka available as central midfielders, but it is clear that neither of them is on Cazorla’s level. Neither midfielder’s form is convincing, and thanks to their playing style and attitude, the risk of receiving yellow and red cards are always there, with Xhaka has been already sent off twice this season. In case it is necessary due to shortage at the middle of the park, Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain can also play there.

Fellow central midfielders Aaron Ramsey and Mohamed Elneny are injured, while Jack Wilshere is playing at Bournemouth on loan for the season.

  • At the time when Cazorla played his last match for Arsenal, the Gunners were level on points with Manchester City, and were three points above Chelsea. Now they are 10 point below the Blues, while also 2 point below the Citizens.
  • Over the previous four seasons, Arsenal managed 2.15 points per game when Cazorla was on the field. Without the Spanish midfielder, they only collected 1.70 points per game when he was not playing.
  • Early in the season when Cazorla was in the team, Arsenal won six games in a row, without him the Gunners haven’t got even close to it.
  • According to stats, his presence has a huge influence on Mesut Ozil. When the two played together, the only match which was not won by the Gunners, was the 1-1 draw away to PSG.
  • Two out of the four most passing combinations between two players this season came from Ozil and Cazorla. The other two coming from Xhaka – Ozil, and MustafiKoscielny.
  • The German scored three goals in 490 minutes with Cazorla on the field, while only managed two in 1376 minutes without Santi.

All below facts clearly show how vital Cazorla is for the whole team.

While it would be a huge boost for the Gunners and for the fans if the club could reach agreements on new contracts with Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, the importance of having the Spanish playmaker is just as important.
