10 Premier League players make Fifa shortlist

Ten Premier League players have made the shortlist for the Best Fifa Men’s Player 2016 award. Three of Leicester City’s title winning players: Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and N’Golo Kante have made the 23-man list, along with seven other Premier League stars.

Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero and Kevin de Bryne, along with two Arsenal players: Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil join them on the list. Two of Manchester United’s summer signings, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba are also shortlisted, alongside West Ham’s Dimitri Payet who impressed for the Hammers and his national side France during Euro 2016.

Fans will be given the chance to vote for their top player after Fifa ended its association with the Ballon d’Or earlier this year. 50% of the vote will be made up by captains and head coaches of national teams, and the other half split between a public online ballot (allowing fans to have an input) and votes from more than 200 media figures from around the world.

A three-man shortlist will be confirmed on December 2 and the winner will be announced on January 9, 2017.

Along with the 10 Premier League players nominated, 10 players from La Liga have made the list. Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Sergio Ramos have been nominated from Real Madrid. Antoine Griezmann of Atletico Madrid joins them, along with Barcelona’s Andres Iniesta, Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez.

Two Bayern Munich players, Robert Lewandowski and Manuel Neuer also made the shortlist, as did Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

The Fifa Men’s Player 2016 list includes some names that were absent from the Ballon d’Or shortlist. Kante, who left English champions Leicester for Chelsea in the summer, along with Arsenal’s Ozil and Sanchez have all made Fifa’s list but did not get nominated for the Ballon d’Or.

The winner of both awards will be announced on the same night in January at a sparkling ceremony in Zurich.
